Raising Awareness of Congenital Heart Defects:
There are many different ways to promote awareness of congenital heart defects. Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect and #1 cause of birth defect related deaths. Yet, very little people have heard of CHD's and even those that have, many times know very little about them. Referring to congenital heart defects as a "hole in the heart" in many cases is quite the understatement.
By helping to spread awareness of congenital heart defects, you could assist in finding a cure for the next generation for our children's children. With more awareness comes more funding for research! We have put together some simple ideas for you to help promote awareness of congenital heart defects.
Do your part help to save the heart of a child born tomorrow by helping TODAY!
1. Hang up fliers. Many places have boards available for community news. See about hanging a flier up anywhere and everywhere you can think of. Fliers can be as simple or as complex as you would like. Just remember this is a flier, people are going to see it in passing so be sure to get to the point right away. Include a statistic or two, include a picture of a child with a heart defect, include some contact information to a CHD organization such as Kids With Heart National Association for Children's Heart Disorders. Kids With Heart NACHD, Inc can even provide you with some fliers at a minimal cost, designed by our volunteer graphic artist and photographer, Amy Carroll.
2. Check into getting a booth at a local fair. Most cities have local fairs during the summer months, see what it takes to have a booth at yours. Have some awareness items available, brochures, and literature about CHD's. You could even put together a poster or see about hosting a CHD Awareness Quilt for the booth. Kids With Heart NACHD, Inc hosts a booth at a Wisconsin fair every year and has had a tremendous response from it.
3. Purchase an awareness item from our awareness store. By having an item visible, people generally will start talking about it. This gives you the perfect opportunity to tell them about CHD's. Tell them how you are involved and how many others are affected.
4. Contact your local media. This can be done at any time of the year. Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day on February 14th is a big day for this. However, this can be done anytime. Contact them on your child's birthday and tell them your story. Contact them on any meaningful day a surgery anniversary, an anniversary for the day of death and tell them your story. You may have to contact them more than once, but keep trying! Persistence is everything!
5. Put together an event. In the process of raising awareness, you can raise a little bit of funding for your favorite organization. A yard sale is a great way to get lots of people involved. Collect items from family, friends, even church members and hold a big garage sale. Have poster visible so everyone can see what the sale is for. Have brochures ready as well to hand out to those that may be looking for more information. This would also be a great time to contact local media and tell them of your efforts. There are many other events that you can do as well you are only limited by your imagination.
